How to get rid of oily skin in summers? Do oily skin makes you uneasy in groups? What to do to avoid getting oily skin?

Our skin protects us from so many harmful objects such as impure air, several toxic substances and ultraviolet sun rays. The skin is an outer covering of our body which is also the largest organ of our integumentary system. Dr. Tanuj Nakra, founder of AVYA skincare has stated that the skin is reactive to all weathers. There are two types of sweat glands i.e. ‘Eccrine’ or regular sweat glands that produce watery sweat and the other is sebaceous sweat glands. It produces oily products that slow the evaporation of regular sweat. Heat from the scorching sun during summers is a nightmare for many people with oily skin. Sebum production in the oil glands increases with increase in temperature which makes the skin oily. Since sweat and oil do not mix well, it gives a sweatier appearance to the skin.  Moreover the combination of oil and sweat can lead to various skin problems like acne, open pores, whiteheads and blackheads. Therefore different skin care regimens need to be taken during different seasons depending on your skin type.

Know your skin type

  • Dry skin is caused by the insufficient secretion of sebum and the skin’s inability to retain moisture. It has a patched appearance and ages faster than normal or oily skin. Dry skin easily gets dehydrated during hot summer days.
  • Oily skin is caused by the overproduction of sebum by sebaceous glands in the outer layer of the skin. Oil present in these glands gets heated up when exposed to sun and results in freckles and pigmentation.
  • Combination skin is a mix of both dry and oily skin with certain areas of the face oily and the rest dry. There is a greasy central panel consisting of forehead, nose and chin. A dry panel consists of cheek area around the eyes and mouth. During summer, the hot and humid climate can make your T-zone oily and there are dry patches on the cheeks.

  • Sensitive skin may have strong reactions like sunburns, redness and breakouts when exposed to triggers like warm temperature and chemicals.

Testing of the skin

Press a tissue paper lightly on your face before washing your face soon after you get up in the morning. Then pull it off and examine after a minute. If it has white flakes, then the skin is dry and if there are drops of moisture or oil patches on it, you have an oily skin. If tissue contains oil on the T-zone area, then it is a combination skin and if there is no oil content in the tissue, then you have a normal skin.

Tips to take care of your skin during summer: How to get rid of oily skin in summers?

TIP #1: Cleansing

Some of the ways you could fight the oily skin is by cleansing right using a good facial cleanser. Always choose a cleanser that is non-comedogenic which does not clog pores and free from parabens. Cleansers containing niacinamide and salicylic acid remove excess oil from the skin making it more supple and radiant. It also removes unwanted debris and maintains a healthy PH level by boosting hydration.

TIP #2: Toning

Toning is the second step in a CTM (Cleansing, Toning, Moisturising) routine. Rose water can be used as a natural toner as it suits almost all skin types. A good toner locks in the moisture content throughout the day. Furthermore, it shrinks open pores and works as a protective barrier over the skin.

TIP #3: Moisturising

A good moisturiser keeps skin hydrated by preventing the early signs of aging. However there is a misconception that moisturising is not needed for oily skin, but that is not the case. Water based moisturisers like Neutrogena Hydro Boost and Plum Green tea mattifying moisturiser can do wonders on oily skin. Aloe vera can also be used as a natural moisturiser which helps in removing post acne scars.

TIP #4: Choose a good sunscreen

Always use a broad spectrum sunscreen before going out in the sun. Try to apply it on the exposed parts of your body. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause serious damage to our skin and result in pigmentation, premature aging and skin cancer. Sunscreen with a high amount of Sun Protection Factor (SPF) actively blocks UV rays from penetrating into our skin. Thus dermatologists recommended using a sunscreen with SPF of at least 30 for more UV protection coverage.

TIP #5: Enhance your complexion by choosing a right face mask.

Face masks rejuvenate and soothe our skin after prolonged exposure to UV rays by removing tanning. Let’s have a look at the best natural facial masks that can bring a glow to your skin during summer!

  • Mix Turmeric, gram flour, curd, lemon juice and rose water. Apply it on your face and wash it after 15 minutes.

TIP #6: Exfoliate once in a week

Exfoliation is yet another imperative step in our skin care routine. It helps in removing whiteheads, blackheads and dead skin cells. Exfoliation helps in boosting the collagen production which in turn gives a healthy glow to our skin. A mix of sugar granules, honey and lime juice can be used as a natural extractor. But exfoliating more than twice in a week can make the skin more oilier and sensitive during summer.

TIP #7 Keep yourself hydrated

During summers our body tends to cool down to maintain the temperature level in the form of sweating. As a result our body is at a risk of dehydration as we lose lots of minerals and water through sweat.

Thus it is advisable to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day especially during summers. It also aids in maintaining the moisture content in our skin and it in turns adds a natural glow to our skin and hair while keeping it hydrated.
